What I learned on summer vacation in Los Angeles

1.        There are more Range Rovers, Mercedes and BMW’s driven in LA than Pickup Trucks in Texas.
2.       Californians love to use their car horns.  Even when there is nowhere for the car in front of them to go, they must beep the horn.  I don’t get it.
3.       You can get Botox on the Beach.  Although I was tempted, I did not do it.
4.       You can get Medical Marijuana at the Recommendation Station on Venice Beach, for just about anything.  And no, this one did not even temp me.
5.       Musical Artists from the 60’s, namely Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors can still “Rock It” at the Whiskey a Go-Go.  They were awesome.
6.       Parking is a pain and I now know why people who live in California are so healthy.  They walk or ride their bicycles everywhere, to avoid paying for parking.
7.       What they say about the traffic in California is true, it’s everywhere.  I guess you just take the good with the bad.   For us, even though we spent time in traffic we were in a convertible, with the top down and the sun shining down on us.  Life doesn’t get much better than that.
8.       The people in California are super friendly.  I was pleasantly surprised at this one.
9.       Pinks Hot Dogs was not all that I thought it would be.  I was very disappointed because I had heard how great it was.
10.   You really can get a tattoo from Kat Von D at LA Ink.  This one did not temp me either, but it was kind of cool to see the place.
11.   The drive on Pacific Coast Highway 1 is breathtaking.  It has got to be one of the most beautiful drives I have ever seen if my life.  WOW is all I can say.
12.   If you ever have the chance to take the drive up Mulholland Dr., DO IT!  Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!  Words cannot describe this scenic trip.
13.   The weather in California is spectacular.  High 70’s to low 80’s during the day with radiant sunshine and 60’s at night.  Sure beats the 107 degree temperature Houston had today.  But best of all, no humidity.
14.   It is not nearly as expensive as I had anticipated.  Sure, there were some expensive restaurants we went to, but lunch for the 2 of us at In-N-Out Burger today was only $11.00.  That included 2 cheeseburgers, an order of French fries,  a chocolate shake, a medium Sprite and a large iced tea.  And FYI, the burgers were delicious.
15.   I now know why so many people move to California and stay forever!  I know I could.

First day of school

For all you Moms and Dads out there that have kiddos going back to school Monday, I want to wish you all good luck.  Whether it is the first day of pre-K or the first day of their senior year, it will be a memorable one.  Some of you will cry when you send your babies off for the first time and some of you will rejoice that you will no longer hear, “I’m bored” or “I’m hungry, what’s there to eat?” all day long.  But, no matter what your circumstances are it will be a new start for all of our children and a step toward that ultimate goal. COLLEGE!
Good luck and may all our children have a fabulous first day of school.

I've been on hiatus

For the past week I have been on hiatus.  I discovered it is OK to do that, even the TV shows and talk shows go on hiatus during the year.  You see, I have been in beautiful Los Angeles, California with my step-daughter, Tara.  We took a week vacation and had an absolute blast.  Because of that, with our sightseeing and star stalking, we now call ourselves Stalkarazzi, I decided take a complete week long vacation from everything, including my blog.
As I am typing this post, I am on my flight back home to Houston, where I cannot wait to see my family.  Tomorrow, I will spend the day with my youngest daughter, Leah, who is starting Junior High School Monday.  We must get ready for her big day.  My biggest dilemma with her is, “Do I let her ride the bus to school Monday or do I take her myself?”  You see, I have always taken her and picked her up from school and this riding the bus thing will be new to both of us.  I’m sure she will do better than me.
I must also make sure that my step-daughter, Victoria, is ready for her big day Monday.  She will be a senior in High School this year.  This summer was big for her, she got her driver’s license and we bought her a truck.  So, we are also starting something new with her, since she will now be driving herself to school every day.
Next up, I am going to help my oldest daughter, Lauren and her husband Daniel, pack up their house.  They are now joining the rest of us in the “Homeowners Club”.  They have purchased a home of their own and are closing on it Monday.  Since Lauren is a school teacher and she has already started back to school, it must be packed up tomorrow.  I am so willing to help get them moved, as they are moving to the street in front of ours.  I am very excited about that.  I’m hoping we can do community meals and take turns cooking.  Hey, it sounds like a great plan to me any way.
As you can see, Monday will be full of a lot of firsts for our family. I just pray that it all goes smoothly.
Oh, I almost forgot, after tackling all of the above, I can’t wait for my husband to get home tomorrow afternoon so we can spend a little time together as well.  He has been working in the marsh this weekend, getting ready for Teal Season and with this drought we are having, it is making it very hard.  I haven’t seen him in a week and I really do miss him.

So, my patient readers, I need one more day to fulfill my Motherly duties, then, I am all yours.  Come Monday I will be blogging away, bringing you the latest and greatest deals and steals.  Helping you save money every way I can.
Thank you for being understanding and I can’t wait to get back on track.

Why I have been MIA

I know I have been MIA for several weeks now and I would like to let all of you know why.
The mother of a very close friend of mine was very ill and in intensive care for about four months.  On August  1, 2011, our dear Peggy passed away.  I spent as much time with my friend as I could, lending moral support, the last few weeks before her mother’s passing.  Because of that, combined with the needs of everyday life, including my husband and four girls, I did not have a lot of time to devote to my blog.  I am sure that you can all understand the reason for my absence, I just wanted to let you know what was going on.
